What a farce it was? With so much of hype all around for this movie (apparently for right reasons given the ugly political face it has to see), it was a sheer disappointment in the end! Yes, it was SRK and Kajol together after eight long years and a lovely chemistry they shared once again; but still the film falls flat on its face. Very well shot movie and merely appreciable performances shall be the last good words I can talk about this movie. Songs just come and go and you realize, perhaps, a little later.
The treatment of this movie was neither raw, which was required for such a plot, nor larger than life for which the Bollywood is known all over and is indeed the quintessential characteristic of the Indian cinema. Story of an Asperger Syndrome affected protagonist who traveled across the continent to tell "My Name Is Khan and I am not a terrorist" to the US President. At the face of it, it does look like addressing a grave issue. Grave indeed, but it was never built as grave in the movie. Traditionally you go to a KJo movie with a ransack full of tissue papers but this time it was not the case. Perhaps, a gallon of Navratan mint oil would have helped to cool down the head. I can't resist recollecting how Tom Hanks portrayed his disillusioned self in "Forrest Gump" many many years ago and such a nice detached narrative that the movie is still called a cult and a classic. Here protagonist's narration just didn't touch at all. I didn't mean to compare chalk and cheese nevertheless as I said "I can't resist". The film does have a noble message and the lengths granted for that makes it look preachy at times. Just like the melodrama of national anthem in K3G, KJo has gone a step ahead to make the lead pair and Katrina hurricane terrorized blacks back in Georgia hymn this in Hindi as well as line to line English transcript. It was simply awkward!
I came out of the theater a little misled and confused. I neither felt happy nor dejected, rather confused. May be actors aced to their abilities but the "brave" director Mr. KJo had perhaps a bad stomach directing it. Not to forget that I have lost all my respect for the critics who I am sure can be bought by big banners.
